Former Staten Island Borough President to take over as NYC Sanitation Commissioner, report says

New York’s Staten Island. THE CITY reports that the Department of Sanitation will be led by a former Staten Island borough president.

The news outlet reports that James Oddo, a two-term borough president, will be promoted from the position of buildings commissioner to the position of sanitation commissioner.

A request for response from Oddo was not answered at the time of publishing, and Mayor Eric Adams’s spokesman, Kayla Mamelak, stated that no appointments become effective until the administration makes an official announcement.

Oddo would replace Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch, who had served as DSNY’s chief since Adams assumed office in 2022, in the new position.In November, she succeeded interim Commissioner Thomas Donlon as police commissioner.

Since 2022, Oddo has also been a part of the Adams administration, first as Deputy Mayor of Operations Meera Joshi’s chief of staff and later as the commissioner of buildings.

After former Buildings Commissioner Eric Ulrich resigned in late 2022 due to an inquiry into his alleged gambling with mob associates, he assumed his current position.

Oddo started what he told Advance/SILive.com was his ideal position as Joshi’s chief of staff after leaving the borough president’s office at the end of 2021.

Former State Senator Diane Savino was recently nominated to a charter revision commission, making Oddo one of numerous Staten Islanders in the Adams administration.She has been a key advisor in the administration for a long time.

Staten Island is also home to Cultural Affairs Commissioner Laurie Cumbo, Department of Design and Construction Commissioner Thomas Foley, and City Housing Authority Chief Executive Officer Lisa Bova-Hiat.

Oddo would replace a department that has implemented a number of controversial new measures on Staten Island, such as new required garbage bins and composting, as sanitation commissioner.
