Here are 6 speed cameras that issued the most fines on Staten Island in 2024, data shows

New York’s Staten Island — New statistics from New York City shows that more than $22 million in speed camera citations were given to drivers on Staten Island in 2024.

According to the most recent data released by New York City, cars exceeding the legal speed limit by 10 miles per hour or more activated the Island’s school zone speeding cameras 441,991 times between January 1 and November 26.

The six most active cameras alone generated 132,173 tickets out of the total for the year, which is about 30% of all tickets issued during this period.

The Staten Island Advance/SILive.com examined the Department of Finance’s 2024 speed camera offenses using publicly accessible data from New York City’s Open Data portal.

We can estimate the amount of money generated by each camera by multiplying the number of citations it issues by the $50 fine for a speed camera violation.

Based on data from New York City, these six speed cameras will be the most active on Staten Island through 2024:

1. Forest Avenue & Willow Road.

The camera at Clove Road and Niagara Street was only installed near the end of June and still issued overa quarter of a million dollars worth of ticketsin just one month of operation.

Near the end of June, a tipster contacted the Advance/SILive.com, saying they noticed a new camera near the corner of Clove Road and Niagara Street in Sunnyside.

After parking on Niagara to observe, the tipster said they saw it going off nearly non-stop as drivers on Clove Road sped by into the night.

In roughly four weeks, 5,504 speeding tickets were issued from that Clove Road camera for a grand total of $275,200, according to the data.

By comparison, the west-facing camera on Clark Avenue and McKinley Avenue one of the most active in 2024 issued 7,821 tickets over the first six months of the year.

The number of school zones with cameras is capped at 750; zones can have multiple cameras. The speed cameras, which must be placed within a quarter-mile radial distance from a school building, issue fines to drivers who exceed the posted speed limit by more than 10 miles per hour.

Following an expansion in 2022, NYC s speedcameras operate around the clock. Previously, they were only on between 6 a.m. and 10 p.m.

In March, a fatal crash near the camera at Goethals Road North and Jules Drive prompted residents tocall for enhanced traffic safetyalong the service road, believing that the speed camera is the bare minimum.
