NYC public school calendar: Key dates to know as students head into 2025

New York’s Staten Island. Public schools in New York City still have plenty of vacation time and other significant dates to remember for the remainder of the academic year as 2024 draws to a conclusion.

For those who are already looking forward to summer, Thursday, June 26, 2025, is the last day of courses.

Between the first and last day of classes, the municipal Department of Education’s academic schedule allows for almost two dozen days off.

The calendar includes weeklong vacations for winter, mid-winter, and spring recess, which includes Christmas and Passover, as well as time off for religious festivals including Good Friday, Yom Kippur, and Eid al-Fitr. Additionally, Diwali is now a public school holiday.

Additionally, the school calendar permits vacation time on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Memorial Day, Juneteenth, Election Day, Thanksgiving, Italian Heritage Day, and Indigenous Peoples Day (Columbus Day).

The calendar also shows the dates of the elementary, middle, and high school parent-teacher conferences.

Winter Break is just a few days away, as public school kids begin their breaks earlier than anticipated this year after New York City declared Monday, December 23, will be added as an extra day off.

These are important dates for the rest of the school year that you should be aware of.
