Staten Islanders made over 100K calls to 311 in 2024; These were the most common complaints

New York’s Staten Island — Every month, some 10,000 complaints are sent to New York City by residents of Staten Island for a variety of issues, including filthy streets, loud neighbors, clogged sewers, and much more.

Staten Islanders have called the city’s non-emergency hotline, 311, 117,337 times as 2024 draws to an end. This hotline allows people to voice grievances and obtain information about public services. According to city records, it is open twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, and 365 days a year.

In order to identify the most common complaints made by borough residents, the Staten Island Advance/SILive.com recently examined publicly accessible 311 data from New York City’s Open Data portal.

All 311 complaints that were made on Staten Island between January 1 and December 18, the latest date accessible at the time of the analysis, are included in the dataset.

Here is a list of the 311 complaints that Staten Island’s city departments received in 2024, along with the most frequent complaints that each received.

New York City Police Department – 41,453 complaints

Emergency calls are sent to 911, and non-emergent calls are routed to the NYPD from 311.

Online city data indicates that between January 1 and December 18, the NYPD received the most complaints of any city agency.

With 14,541 and 13,311 complaints, respectively, illegal parking and noise accounted for the majority of the 311 complaints filed with the NYPD.

Other frequent grievances were illegal fireworks (1,416), obstructed driveways (4,297), and abandoned cars (4,506).

Department of Sanitation – 17,636 complaints

Since the start of the year, Staten Island’s second-highest number of complaints (311), according to the city’s Department of Sanitation (DSNY).

According to data, the most common complaints that DSNY got were about dead animals (1,262), illegal dumping (1,677), derelict vehicles (1,497), obstruction (1,783), unclean conditions (3,445), and missing collection (3,629).

Department of Transportation – 14,564 complaints

Given the numerous transportation problems that have long afflicted Staten Island, residents won’t be surprised when the Department of Transportation (DOT) completes the top three.

Due to the persistent problem of potholes on Staten Island, nearly half of the complaints (7,054 out of 14,564) concerned the state of the streets.

With 2,244 street light condition complaints, 2,058 traffic signal condition complaints, and 1,480 sidewalk condition complaints, the borough’s transportation infrastructure accounted for the great majority of complaints.

Department of Parks and Recreation – 12,356 complaints

Of all the agencies on Staten Island, the borough of parks, the Department of Parks and Recreation (Parks Department) had the fourth-highest number of complaints.

3,662 complaints about damaged trees, 2,901 about overgrown trees and branches, 1,704 about root, sewage, and sidewalk issues, and 1,461 about dead or dying trees were the most frequent complaints the agency received.

Department of Housing Preservation and Development – 11,420 complaints

Up to the end of December, the Department of Housing Preservation and Development (HPD) received over X,XXX complaints, or around 1,000 complaints every month.

The most common complaint was about unhygienic conditions (2,661), followed by issues with hot water and heat (2,552), plumbing (1,270), paint and plaster (1,009), and doors and windows (824).

Department of Environmental Protection – 11,148 complaints

Since the beginning of 2024, the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) has received 11,148 complaints, ranking sixth among all local agencies.

The most frequent complaints (4,583) were related to the water system, which includes leaking fire hydrants, low water pressure, and other issues. These were followed by lead (1,305), noise (1,660), and sewer (2,686).
