Man, 19, opened fire at Staten Island playground. Now he pays the price

New York’s Staten Island. In 2023, a felon will suffer the price for his terrifying act of firing 11 rounds at a playground in New Brighton, hitting a man in the stomach.

Francis Lloyd, 19, of Stapleton’s 100 block of Broad Street, pleaded guilty to a second-degree attempted murder charge on January 6 and was sentenced to 10 years in prison and five years of post-release supervision, according to a spokesperson for District Attorney Michael E. McMahon.

According to McMahon, on August 12, 2023, Lloyd, a violent predicate criminal, shot one person in the Mahoney Playground on Jersey Street with eleven rounds from an illegal handgun.

According to a statement from the district attorney, Lloyd paid the price for his heinous deed today in which he almost killed a fellow Staten Islander.

The incident

Authorities said that on a Saturday afternoon, Lloyd got out of a car carrying a handgun, went up to a basketball game at Mahoney Playground, and began shooting.

According to the NYPD, the victim was standing close to the intersection of Jersey Street and Crescent Avenue at approximately 2:20 p.m.

According to authorities, Lloyd brandished a gun and fired it several times.

Before Lloyd got back into the car and left the area, the 38-year-old victim was shot in the stomach and is thought to have been a bystander.

McMahon continued by expressing gratitude to the NYPD for their investigation work in locating and apprehending Lloyd as the gunman.

“This dangerous defendant is held fully accountable for possessing and using an illegal firearm on our borough’s shores, and I commend Trials Bureau Chief Antonia Assenso and Juvenile Justice Unit Chief Alexis Argentine for securing a ten-year prison sentence,” McMahon continued.
