After the 2023 season, Martindale parted ways with the Giants and joined Michigan.
After former Wolverines head coach Jim Harbaugh left for the Chargers with defensive coordinator Jesse Minter, the position at Michigan became available. After the New York fired linebackers coach Drew Wilkins, who had been close to Martindale for years (along with his brother, defensive assistant Kevin Wilkins), word leaked out that Martindale was leaving the Giants.
The defensive coordinator allegedly yelled off head coach Brian Daboll and stormed out of the building following Wilkins’ firing, escalating the rumored tension between Martindale and Daboll this season. Later, the Giants declared that they had mutually decided to cut ties with Martindale.
