State Liquor Authority takes action against Staten Island deli after community outcry

New York’s Staten Island. The Advance/SILive.com has revealed that a Port Richmond deli was disciplined by the State Liquor Authority (SLA) after the community complained about public drinking and other practices.

According to a SLA spokesperson, the company was fined in July 2024 after the agency began disciplinary action against Corner Bagel & Deli, located at 760 Port Richmond Ave., in 2023 for allowing alcohol on the property. The SLA spokesperson stated that Advance/SILive.com would need to receive the information under the Freedom of Information Law (FOIL) and declined to immediately disclose details regarding the penalties imposed.

Following months of community objections about the location, especially from the Port Richmond North Shore Alliance civic organization, the penalty was imposed.

Mario Buonviaggio, its vice chair, stated that the community has sought action due to excessive drinking at the site and expressed concerns over the worst-case scenario because of the location’s close proximity to nearby schools.

It is Port Richmond’s imposing entryway. As soon as you step onto Richmond Avenue, you can’t help but notice the drunks loitering in front of the business. It’s not just one or two guys, after all. “It’s like a dozen guys at times,” he claimed. These children are heading home from school, and I’m worried that something inappropriate will occur. We’re working to stop that.Although there is no certainty that it will occur, the possibility of it happening is concerning.

The location is across from multiple Forest Avenue bus stations and is within a half-mile radius of I.S. 51, PS 22, and PS 21.

The store employee, who identified himself as a manager, stated last week that the business’s close proximity to Egbert Triangle has made it a popular spot for people to drink in the park when questioned about the community’s concerns and the response from police.

The civic organization collected a number of images and videos of people gathering outside the site over a few months. Community members observed fighting, drunkenness, and public urinating outside the deli.

From July 1, 2024, to January 12, 2025, police attended to the site 19 times, primarily for low-level crimes, according to an NYPD representative. According to authorities, a cutting incident on June 15 prompted the most extreme response.

According to police, the victim was taken to Richmond University Medical Center in West Brighton in stable condition after a verbal confrontation between two individuals outside the venue at around 9 p.m. that day turned violent and resulted in a box cutter slashing.

On June 19, police arrested Christian Rodriguez, 32, of Mariners Harbor, on two charges of assault and menacing in connection with the alleged incident. According to authorities, the accused slasher is presently being detained on Rikers Island.

In the end, the municipal organization hopes SLA takes additional action and revokes the store’s beer sales license, according to Buonviaggio.

According to him, it’s the beer’s accessibility. When you discard the beer, the issue is resolved.
