New York state civil service: These are the salaries for exams open through February

Some occupations pay more than others, and the New York State Department of Civil Service (DCS) has made public the application schedule for the state’s entry-level civil service exams through February.

The open-competitive tests offer a chance to begin a profession in the state of New York. Anyone who satisfies the requirements stated in the examination notification is eligible to take these tests.

The tests will be administered online or as written assessments in person. Candidates who meet the requirements can apply online at https://www.cs.ny.gov/examannouncements/types/oc/.

Bridge repair supervisor, disaster preparedness program representative 2, disaster preparedness program representative 3, and thruway maintenance supervisor are among the exams for which the application period has opened.

The deadline for applications is February 19.

To apply for examinations, go to www.cs.ny.gov/examannouncements/types/oc. There are no application costs for these tests.

The state states that within the deadline, an application must be sent in by mail or online. Applications submitted after the filing date will not be considered.

You must pass the written exam in order to be considered for an appointment. Tests may be given online or with paper booklets and answer sheets from the Department of Civil Service.

Supervisor of bridge repair

Pay: $54,860

Deadline to apply: February 19, 2025

DCS’s description of the job:You would help oversee the general management of the knowledgeable and inexperienced personnel who maintain and fix both high-level and low-level bridges as a Bridge Repair Supervisor 1. In accordance with the demands of the project, you would oversee the activities of different-sized work crews and be in charge of scheduling compliance and all relevant safety regulations. You may carry out tasks pertaining to the crew’s designated bridges’ routine and preventative maintenance, repair, replacement, reconstruction, inspection, and rehabilitation. In their absence, you would also carry out the responsibilities of a Bridge Repair Supervisor 2. It will be your responsibility to oversee and/or carry out snow and ice control operations.

Representative 2 of the disaster preparedness program

Pay: $65,001

DCS’s description of the job:In your capacity as a Disaster Preparedness Program Representative 2, you would support the development and execution of emergency management and disaster preparedness strategies and initiatives. For a variety of emergency management programs and operations, such as response and recovery efforts, you might serve as the primary or secondary liaison with other state agencies, federal agencies, and local government offices.

Representative 3 of the disaster preparedness program

Compensation: $84,156/$84,246

DCS’s description of the job:In your role as a Disaster Preparedness Program Representative 3, you would carry out the aforementioned tasks as well as assist local jurisdictions in creating and completing work plans on time, testing and evaluating natural technological disaster preparedness plans, and coordinating and logistically supporting training meetings and exercises involving volunteer, state, federal, and local staff. You would be in charge of lower-level employees.

Representative 4 of the disaster preparedness program

Compensation: $93,530/$90,931

DCS’s description of the job:You would oversee, manage, and suggest policies for one or more homeland security disaster preparedness planning, training, response, recovery, and reimbursement programs as a Disaster Preparedness Program Representative 4, working under the general supervision of executive level personnel. You would be in charge of lower-level employees.

Supervisor of Thruway Maintenance

Pay: $53,144

DCS’s description of the job:Under the general supervision of a Thruway Maintenance Supervisor 2, a Thruway Maintenance Supervisor 1 would oversee a maintenance unit consisting of skilled, semi-skilled, and unskilled workers who would perform a variety of tasks, such as the construction, maintenance, repair, and rehabilitation of infrastructure, such as bridges, pavement, facilities, retaining walls, rights-of-way, lighting, highway signs, sign structures, guide rail, excavation, rock cuts, fencing, and drainage features. Additionally, you can be given complete control over particular projects, making sure that all work complies with all applicable safety and environmental standards. Maintenance units also handle traffic management, snow and ice removal, and other tasks. You may collaborate with other maintenance units and be assigned to different shifts throughout the year to complete all of this. Additionally, you could have to respond to emergency callouts, work overtime, and/or oversee maintenance detachment deployments.
