On Tuesday, May 14, in Orange County Court, 18-year-old Joseph Lightfoot from Wallkill, New York, pleaded guilty to weapon possession in connection to a shooting incident that occurred on April 25 in the Village of Walden. The altercation, which took place during a heated family dispute, resulted in Lightfoot accidentally shooting his girlfriend in the wrist.
The incident began when Lightfoot, accompanied by his girlfriend and another man, arrived at a relative’s home to confront them over allegedly stolen property. The confrontation quickly escalated into a physical fight. Amidst the chaos, Lightfoot pulled out a loaded, unlicensed pistol from his hoodie. In an attempt to threaten the male resident, he fired a single shot. Tragically, the bullet missed its intended target, striking his girlfriend and shattering a nearby car window.
Authorities were swiftly alerted, and the Village of Walden Police responded to the scene. During their investigation, Lightfoot admitted to firing the weapon, despite not having a permit for the gun. This confession played a crucial role in the subsequent legal proceedings.
As part of his plea agreement, prosecutors recommended a sentence of 10 years in prison, followed by five years of parole. Orange County District Attorney David Hoovler emphasized the gravity of Lightfoot’s actions, stating, “This defendant’s life-threatening actions endangered the lives of numerous people. While his careless choices thankfully did not result in the death of another, such an outcome was easily foreseeable under the circumstances.”
The case highlights the severe consequences of firearm misuse, especially when combined with a lack of proper licensing and control. It also serves as a stark reminder of how quickly a volatile situation can escalate when weapons are involved. Lightfoot’s actions, though unintended to cause harm to his girlfriend, underscore the inherent dangers of possessing and using an unlicensed firearm in any scenario.
Lightfoot’s sentencing is scheduled for Wednesday, July 31. The recommended sentence reflects the seriousness of the offense and aims to serve as a deterrent to others who might consider carrying or using unlicensed firearms. The case has also sparked discussions in the community about gun control and the importance of resolving disputes without resorting to violence.

The incident has undoubtedly left a lasting impact on those involved, particularly Lightfoot’s girlfriend, who is recovering from her injuries. The legal outcome will likely be a significant chapter in Joseph Lightfoot’s life, marking a pivotal moment that underscores the consequences of his actions.
