Residents in several New Jersey neighborhoods are grappling with the aftermath of a severe storm that struck on Thursday, leaving behind a trail of destruction and disruption. Jersey Central Power & Light reported more than 4,000 power outages by Friday morning, predominantly affecting the western and southern regions of the state.
In the town of West Milford, the storm’s impact was particularly devastating. High winds and heavy rains caused trees to topple, blocking roads and causing significant property damage. Many residents are now faced with the daunting task of clearing debris and repairing their homes and vehicles.
Helena, a resident of Lake Shore Drive, recounted the harrowing experience, describing it as “a nightmare. Very scary.” She noted that even longtime residents, some of whom have lived in the area for 40 to 50 years, said they had never witnessed such severe weather. One neighbor’s tree broke in half, with the trunk crashing onto a truck parked in her driveway.
Christopher Davis, another Lake Shore Drive resident, is dealing with extensive damage to his property. “We have roof damage, we have shed damage, fence damage, brush damage, fence ruined,” Davis said.
The cost of removing the fallen tree trunks and repairing the damage is estimated to be over $7,000. Despite the destruction, Davis expressed gratitude for having a generator, which has kept his home powered. “I have TV, I have cable, I have internet so basically I have it so nothing goes awry. It works out well if you’re prepared for it,” he said.
The storm’s fury was evident throughout the neighborhood. News 12 New Jersey reported scenes of chaos, including a tree that had fallen onto a pontoon boat, utility poles sliced in half with power lines hanging perilously, and some areas experiencing flooding. Local resident Joanne Silvano described the terrifying moment she witnessed a tree crash into a truck, calling it “the worst sound I’ve ever heard.”
The West Milford Department of Public Works has been working tirelessly to clear the debris and fallen trees from Lake Shore Drive and other affected areas. Armed with chainsaws and chippers, the crew has made significant progress, but many roads remain obstructed, and the task of restoring power continues.
The community has shown resilience and solidarity in the face of the storm’s devastation. Neighbors have come together to assist each other, sharing resources and offering support. Despite the widespread damage, there have been no reports of serious injuries, which many residents consider a silver lining in an otherwise dire situation.

As the cleanup efforts continue, the focus remains on restoring power and rebuilding. The storm has left a lasting impression on the residents of West Milford, serving as a stark reminder of the power of nature and the importance of preparedness. For now, the community remains united in its resolve to recover and move forward, one step at a time.
