Florida pet owners are being warned about a new scam targeting those desperately searching for their lost pets. The Palm Beach County Department of Public Safety’s Animal Care and Control division (PBC ACC) issued an alert on Facebook, cautioning that scammers are posing as shelter employees to collect money from unsuspecting pet owners fraudulently.
The scheme involves phone calls where scammers claim to have found the missing pets and demand payment for their safe return. This tactic preys on the vulnerability of owners who have publicly shared details and contact information about their lost pets online.
“It has come to our attention that scammers are targeting owners of lost pets,” PBC ACC’s post stated. “Someone is representing themselves as an employee of our shelter and trying to collect money. PBC ACC will never ask for money over the phone.”
The division urged pet owners to avoid transferring funds or sharing credit card details with anyone claiming to be from PBC ACC. They advised checking the SNAP website daily for updates on lost pets.
