Republican Rep. Victoria Spartz Faces Weapons Charge at Dulles Airport!

A spokesman for the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority told NBC News on Monday that Rep. Victoria Spartz, R-Ind., has been charged with violating airport rules about guns at Washington Dulles International Airport in Virginia.

The spokesperson said that Spartz was charged on Friday and pointed to a law in Virginia that makes it illegal to “possess or transport” a gun or other dangerous weapon “into any air carrier airport terminal.” This law deals with the dangerous use of firearms or other weapons. According to the law, the violation is a misdemeanor.

A representative for Spartz said the ticket was given to her before her overseas flight to Romania for a meeting of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe Parliamentary Assembly.

“Yesterday, while going through security at Dulles Airport, Rep. Spartz accidentally brought an empty handgun in her suitcase with no magazine or bullets. She did not realize it was in the pocket of her suitcase,” a spokesperson said in a statement Monday in response to a request for comment.

The nonpartisan Cook Political Report says that Spartz is running for re-election in Indiana’s 5th Congressional District, which includes suburbs north of Indianapolis and is strongly Republican.

Spartz is the first immigrant from Ukraine to serve in Congress. The person who ran against her in the primary in May said bad things about her support for helping Ukraine and other problems.

Spartz is not the first politician in the past few years to have been charged with a crime for having a gun at an airport. In 2022, while he was still Rep. Madison Cawthorn, R-N.C., was caught with a loaded handgun at an airport security stop in his home state. During the two years he was president, he was stopped twice at airports with a gun. The primary for Cawthorn was lost in 2022.
