New York’s Staten Island. To the joy of a packed house, the stars aligned Thursday night at the Hilton Garden Inn, where an A-list dais of sportsmen, sports figures, and celebrities turned out for the annual Teddy Dinner.
As the organization raises money for the Dr. Theodore Atlas Foundation in memory of his father, Hall of Fame boxing trainer Teddy Atlas, who is arguably the toughest person in the room 99.9% of the time, displays his gracious side for the 28th time.
Knowing you makes me proud. Staten Island is where we are. “I’m honored to know yours,” Atlas joked in his introduction. Whoa! Take a look at these folks! We are grateful for our positive connection with the fire marshal.
Like in previous years, the attendees had the unique opportunity to mingle with national sports broadcasters like Stephen A. Smith, Sal Paolantonio, and John Sterling; fighting legends like Larry Holmes, Michael Moorer, and Chael Sonnen; and actors like Tony Danza, Liev Schreiber, and Chazz Palminteri.
Atlas told the dais, “Every year you define what a celebrity really is.” There are some very remarkable folks in this room.
The foundation was established in 1997 as a community service organization with headquarters in New York that offers financial and emotional assistance to people and organizations in need, with a special emphasis on the needs of children.
The Dr. Theodore Atlas Champion Award winners Oliver Papraniku and Mike Randazzo, the John G. Rowan Admiral Award winners Daniel Casella, Rob Ricco, and Joe Obermaier, and the Dr. Theodore Atlas Jack Newfield Award winner John Sterling—the longtime radio voice of the New York Yankees who recently retired—were also honored.
Webster’s Dictionary is not necessary for me to define core strength; Atlas was included. You all do the best job of not just telling us what your fundamental strengths are, but also demonstrating them to us via your decisions.
Additionally, he said, it reassures us that no matter what issues this nation and the world may face, we will always be alright. Because the best boxers and individuals in the world are right here when the bell rings.
