Legendary NYC broadcast journalist retiring ‘with an asterisk’ from NBC 4 New York after more than 50 years on TV

After more than 50 years, legendary broadcast journalist Chuck Scarborough has announced that he is leaving his regular responsibilities as news anchor at NBC 4 New York.

At 6 p.m. on Thursday, December 12, he will be leaving his position as anchor at WNBC.

In an NBC 4 New York press release, Scarborough stated that there is only one word to describe it: thankfulness. For almost 50 years, our WNBC viewers have welcomed me into their homes, believing that I will deliver the news impartially, accurately, and fairly while also providing them with timely and important information during both our best and worst moments. It has been a remarkable honor.

He indicated that he was retiring with an asterisk, but he continued to occasionally contribute to programming and special station projects.

The best broadcast journalist in America is Chuck Scarborough. According to Eric Lerner, president and general manager of NBC 4 New York, he is a unique individual off-camera and has unparalleled abilities as an anchor, reporter, and newsroom leader. We are lucky that Chuck will occasionally return to his News 4 New York family to report on special assignments following his final newscast next month.

Tonight, 11/23/24, is there a new Saturday Night Live episode?23, 2024, November 23, 9:00 a.m.

On November 19, 2024, at 10:00 a.m., a Staten Island gang member who trafficked a 14-year-old girl pays a price by entering a guilty plea.

On March 25, 1974, Scarborough started working for WNBC, anchoring the weekday news at 6 and 11 p.m. from Studio 6B at 30 Rockefeller Center, which is now home to The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. After more than 42 years, he left his position as anchor of WNBC’s 11 p.m. show in 2016, however he continued to co-host the program at 6 p.m.

“Chuck has been the rock of 30 Rock, guiding viewers and news teams for half a century in a city and business that are constantly changing,” said Amy Morris, executive vice president of News for NBC 4 New York and Telemundo 47. We celebrate Chuck by continuing his legacy to make WNBC a force for the next 50 years as he embarks on a new phase.

Scarborough’s successor will be revealed later, according to NBC 4 New York.
