Angelina Hodgens is aiming for her second straight Jaques Award, but she might be vying for a Big 10 championship in a year.
She signed her National Letter of Intent last week to attend Northwestern University on a full athletic scholarship in the fall, according to St. Joseph-by-the-Sea’s all-around dynamo on the court.
Naturally, Hodgens will prioritize defending the Vikings’ CHSAA AA title, and at some time this winter, she’ll probably rewrite her school’s scoring record.
Last season, the four-year varsity player averaged 21.4 points, 12.5 rebounds, 2.9 assists, and 2.6 steals, earning her a spot on the CHSAA AA’s First Team.
With 1,615 career markers at the end of her third season in Huguenot, she was only 152 points short of the school record set by former teammate Danielle Williamsen.
However, the 5-foot-10 combo guard will go to Evanston, Illinois, to continue her basketball career at NU after her time at Staten Island ends.
Hodgens claims she knew Northwestern was the right location for her even though she received offers from St. John’s, Providence, UMass, and numerous other schools.
What particularly impressed me during my visit in mid-June was the focus on honing my skills while I’m there, said Hodgens, who will play for longtime head coach Joe McKeown.
I have the impression that the instructors genuinely think I can succeed and will continue to improve me daily.
“I am so thankful that I was able to experience the recruiting process, even though it was a little stressful,” she continued. I think my versatility is what my coaches like most about me.
I adore that the coaching staff recognizes my efforts and honors the athletes’ work ethic.
A three-point shooter, relentless rebounder, and fluid facilitator, Hodgens believes her game is ready for the next phase. However, once she arrives, she is prepared to take on any function that may be required.
My strategy seems to work effectively in the Big 10. “I plan to contribute to the team by playing on both sides of the court, rebounding the ball, and scoring on different levels,” she stated.
I anticipate putting in a lot of effort and competing for minutes. I’m eager to learn everything I can and am prepared to take on any position required to go on the floor.
Although she has high school goals she would like to accomplish first, she intends to study occupational therapy or broadcasting in college.
First and foremost, she wants to surpass 2,000 career points, which is a personal objective, and win a state title for Sea coach Josh Suslak this season.
According to Hodgens, I bring with me a winning culture (from Sea) and a coach who has supported me for the past four years. I will always cherish the relationships I have built with both my current and former teammates.
“Next fall, I can’t wait to get on campus and work with my new teammates,” she said.
