NY weather: Weather alert issued for heavy snow in New York Friday evening

At 6:37 p.m. on Friday, the National Weather Service issued a weather alert for Cayuga, Onondaga, Tompkins, Madison, Cortland, and Chenango counties, warning of heavy snow through 7:30 p.m.

“At 6:36 p.m., an area of heavy snow was near Scott, or near Cortland moving east at 20 MPH,” the weather service reported.

Cortland, Hamilton, Homer, Groton, Locke, Genoa, Plymouth, North Norwich, Preble, and Sherburne are among the places affected by the warning. The following highway exits are included in this: New York Interstate 81 between 10 and 14.

“In winter weather conditions, conditions can rapidly deteriorate,” the weather service says. Be ready for roads covered with ice or snow. Reduce your speed and give yourself more time to get there. If you have to drive into or through this area of heavy snow, go with additional caution. Accidents may result from abrupt changes in visibility and perhaps slick roads.

United Robots offers a service called Advance Local Weather Alerts that gathers the most recent information from the National Weather Service using machine learning.
