New York’s Staten Island. Prepare yourself for a war of the boroughs, as students from public schools in New York City will compete in the computer game Minecraft to help design the most inclusive, future-ready urban areas.
Ahead of the third Mayor’s Cup, where the borough champions will fight, Schools Chancellor Melissa Aviles-Ramos recently announced the opening of the official entry time for the fifth annual New York City Minecraft Education Battle of the Boroughs (BOTB). Each borough will have an in-person E-sports qualification round where the top submissions will compete.
The deadline for student team submissions is March 7, 2025.
The municipal Department of Education’s (DOE) website has details on how to participate in the challenge.
BOTB is an academic K–12 esports competition created in collaboration with Minecraft Education and C40’s Reinventing Cities initiative to include the youngest New Yorkers in determining the direction of their city.
Student teams will compete to design the most inclusive, future-ready city places, building on the Mayor’s Digital Gaming Initiative, the city’s strategic climate strategy, PlaNYC: Getting Sustainability Done (GSD), and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the UN.
Students who take part in this challenge will have the opportunity to visit the five boroughs, talk to local representatives, and discover more about the sustainability initiatives of New York City. Additionally, the DOE claims that students will acquire critical-thinking and problem-solving abilities through enjoyable, immersive computer science and gaming activities.
According to Aviles-Ramos, the yearly Battle of the Boroughs contest gives our city’s youth the opportunity to take on the roles of leaders, activists, and innovators, each of whom will have a unique impact on the future of New York. Our children will be prepared for fulfilling professions and long-term success by learning important and in-demand skills like coding, as well as leadership, teamwork, and problem-solving. I’m incredibly grateful to all of our partners who provide our children this chance, and I’m excited to see the wonderful effects they will have.
Students in grades K–12 can form a team of no more than five peers to take part in this competition, and they can submit their masterpiece online (school personnel must submit it). Each school is allowed to send more than one team.
The following question will be posed to the students: How can you revitalize the neighborhood or area around your school to increase food equity, give nature more room to thrive, and create chances for the community as a whole to prosper?
Teams who qualify will advance to each borough championship’s semi-finals. In order to win the NYC Battle of the Boroughs title, the borough champions will then contend for the Mayor’s Cup.
In May, the Mayor’s Cup will take place.
