New York’s Staten Island — Cristina Orlando, 32, took her firstborn daughter to a local retail store to get her ears pierced when she was a baby because she believed there were no other options.
Staff hurried to make room for the snaking queue behind us, which made it impersonal and insufficient. For an anxious mother and an overstimulated infant, this was not the best scenario. The resident of Randall Manor later said, “I discovered that there are no official training requirements to pierce ears in New York state.”
When it came time to pierce her second daughter’s ears, Orlando, a registered nurse with experience at Richmond University Medical Center in West Brighton and Brooklyn Veterans Hospital, looked for a better option.
To have her ears pierced by a registered nurse in a more controlled environment, I drove ninety minutes from my house. The mother of daughters who are now one and three years old noted that although the experience was safer and much nicer, it was still difficult to travel with a baby who despises cars.
She recently established Pierced by Cristina Orlando RN, Inc. for this reason.
I founded Pierced by Cristina Orlando RN, Inc. after being encouraged by my girls to quit the hospital environment. The sensitive patient-centered care I had anticipated a newborn would receive was absent from both of their ear piercing experiences. I therefore made the decision to add Orlando in order to fulfill that job for my community.
Orlando, who graduated from Wagner College in Grymes Hill with two bachelor’s degrees in biology and nursing, continued, “I want to give my community everything they need for a trauma-free ear piercing experience in the comfort of your home.”
Why She Opened Now
During the coronavirus (COVID-19) epidemic, Orlando worked as a nurse and developed her abilities in infection control and wound care.
During the pandemic, my experience as a registered nurse brought to light the significance of infection prevention and control. In-home services were becoming more and more popular, and businesses were starting to follow suit, she said. The need for this kind of service in my community became clear to me after I became a mother and made connections with other mothers. So, after having my two kids, I opened my business when I felt ready.
Services offered
According to Orlando, she presently provides nose piercings for people over 15 with parental permission, in-home ear piercings for people two months and up, and even piercing parties. Orlando stated that she intends to provide body piercings in-home in the future.
Orlando claimed that she actually serves everyone who wants to get pierced in the convenience and seclusion of their own house.
Additionally, her piercing company benefits from her nursing abilities.
I am patient and adaptable. Orlando replied, “I know things come up, especially with babies.” For every appointment, I allow enough time to accommodate diaper changes, bottles, irritability, etc. If someone cannot find a time on my website that works for them, I encourage them to get in touch with me directly to make an appointment.
Orlando also adores every second of her new venture.
All of it is my favorite aspect of my profession. I enjoy making new friends. I adore being able to provide a safe refuge for parents who decide to get their baby’s ears pierced. She remarked, “I love learning that they’ve made this decision for personal, cultural, or traditional reasons.”
Since it wasn’t as frightening as they had anticipated, I adore seeing the relief on everyone’s faces. Sending follow-up notes and learning that every piercing is healing well makes me happy. And I particularly enjoy it when parents share photos of their infants looking cute in their new jewelry, Orlando.
