Luis Severino, good bye. The right-hander is going west after bidding the Metsadieu.
The news that Severino had agreed to a three-year, $67 million contract with the A’s was originally reported by ESPN’s Jeff Passan on Thursday. Joel Sherman of The New York Post claims that the contract includes a $500,000 assignment bonus in the event that he is traded, as well as an opt-out after the second year.
This is the most guaranteed contract in A’s history, guaranteeing Severino $23.33 million annually, more than $2 million more than the qualifying offer he turned down from the Mets in November.

Severino posted a message on social media shortly after the agreement was revealed to Mets supporters:
Severino posted on X/Twitter, “Thank you New York (Mets) fans for all the support all year long.” Thank you for everything, front office and Mets crew. I will always be appreciative of this amazing season.
The 30-year-old was viewed as dangerous at the time for turning down the Mets’ offer. After having the worst season of his career with the Yankees in 2023, Severino had completely changed his ways with the Mets in 2024.
Severino relied more on contact than strikeouts while he was with the Mets. He improved his ground ball percentage (45.2%) by using his sinker more frequently, going from 2.8% in 2023 to 24.8%.
He had a successful season as a result, recording his first season back to full health since 2018 and finishing with a 3.91 ERA, 161 strikeouts, and his second-career complete game in 31 starts. With 182 innings pitched, he also led the Mets, one-third more than his now-former lockermate Sean Manaea, who threw 181 2/3 innings the previous season.
Although the Mets are sad to see Severino go, they will gain from his signing elsewhere because he is a fantastic clubhouse person who developed a close relationship with the Queens pitching staff. He signed somewhere after turning down the qualifying offer, so New York is entitled to compensation in the form of a draft selection.
