STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. In both reading and math state standardized tests, Staten Island public school kids may have performed better than their citywide counterparts, but data indicates that reading proficiency fell this spring compared to 2023, continuing a statewide trend.
Prior to the start of the new school year, New York State made public the results of the state exams from this past spring. The percentage of students in New York City who were proficient readers was 49.1%, down from 51.7% in 2023. The citywide percentage of pupils who were proficient in math increased from 49.9% in 2023 to 53.4% in 2024.
