‘Power’ actor kicks off $2.4M financial literacy initiative in Staten Island high schools

Actor from Staten Island, New YorkIn his hometown of Staten Island, Michael Rainey Jr. has teamed up with the Recovery Education Foundation (R.A.R.E. Foundation) to provide three high schools with $2.4 million in financial literacy services.

The 24-year-old actor, who is most recognized for playing Tariq St. Patrick on Power and Power Book II: Ghost, has contributed $600,000 to launch a financial literacy campaign that will equip high school kids with the skills and information they need to create financial security. Equifax, the R.A.R.E Foundation, and Rainey Jr. are working together on this project.

The effort was started by Rainey Jr.’s $600,000 donation, but Equifax is now offering credit monitoring, identity theft protection, and educational resources to students and their families. The R.A.R.E. Foundation will provide the infrastructure and financial literacy resources needed to implement the program at three high schools on Staten Island.

Rainey Jr. visited with students at Port Richmond High School on November 14 to discuss his financial path and stress the value of establishing credit scores and safeguarding your identity as part of the initiative’s launch.

When I was a child, I would undoubtedly go home, ask my parents what their credit score was, and begin the process of obtaining authorization to use their account so that I could begin constructing my own, Rainey Jr. said.

Additionally, Rainey Jr. and the R.A.R.E. Foundation came to Curtis High School to talk about their credit program and financial literacy.

The third high school on Staten Island that will participate has not yet been revealed.
