New York’s Staten Island. According to a person familiar with the inquiry, the FDNY fire marshals have concluded that a lithium-ion battery was the cause of the fire that broke out at Staten Island Technical High School in New Dorp last week.
At the high school, 485 Clawson St., the fire was reported shortly after 7 p.m. on Friday.
According to an FDNY spokeswoman, the fire was contained at 7:47 p.m. by about 12 units and 60 fire and EMS personnel.
According to the FDNY, a firefighter was slightly hurt but declined on-scene medical assistance.
A hose was spotted being run through a Lindbergh Avenue school door, and a ladder was visible being extended to the school’s rooftop.
During the response, several of the lights inside the school were turned on, and alarms and bells could be heard ringing throughout the building.
During the emergency, a second ladder was also visible in the back of the school, reaching the third storey.
According to DOE spokeswoman Jenna Lyle, “the safety and well-being of our students and staff is our top priority.” The FDNY responded swiftly to a little fire, making sure that neither personnel nor students were harmed. The school was open and functioning normally.
