Rep. Malliotakis sits in on Homeland Security hearing on drones plaguing Staten Island

New York’s Staten Island — Rep. Nicole Malliotakis (R-South Brooklyn/Staten Island) is attending the Homeland Security hearing of the House Committee on the mysterious drones that have been causing problems in Brooklyn, New Jersey, and Staten Island.

Six representatives from various government agencies and commercial groups will participate in the hearing, which is titled Safeguarding the Homeland from Unmanned Aerial Systems.

A written declaration lists the following people:

  • Brad Wiegmann:

Deputy Assistant Attorney General for National Security, Department of Justice

  • Cathy Lanier

: chief security officer, National Football League

  • Jeffrey Baumgartner:

vice president of National Security and Resilience, Berkshire Hathaway Energy

  • Keith Jones:

deputy executive assistant commissioner of Air and Marine Operations, U.S. Customs and Border Protection

  • Paul Schwennesen:

PhD, co-director, Global Strategy Decisions Group

  • Robert W. Wheeler Jr.:

assistant director of the Critical Incident Response Group, Federal Bureau of Investigation

Drones have been spotted flying over military locations in New York City, including Fort Hamilton in Brooklyn and Fort Wadsworth.

On Friday, Malliotakis demanded an official probe and a temporary ban on drone flights.

The FBI, which is spearheading the fact-finding effort to determine what these drones are doing, and other state agencies, including the NYPD, did not provide any updates on the inquiry over weekend, a Malliotakis office official confirmed on Monday.

Other political figures on Staten Island expressed their worries about the drones, whose enigmatic appearances have been perplexing citizens, politicians, and investigators alike.

The fact that no one can determine who is operating these drones, where they are coming from, or why they are there is strange and rather strange. According to reports, some of the drones might be operating without a transponder, which raises questions about their location, said Vito Fossella, the president of the borough.

A Reddit member wrote on Sunday that there are drones everywhere on Staten Island and that I’m now receiving Ring videos of a lot of them. No one is aware of what is happening. It’s incredible.

Following the drones’ initial appearance in New Jersey in November, the FBI formally extended their search parameters to include Staten Island.
