College football: Ex-Curtis star Ty Son Lawton will be front and center when Indiana meets Notre Dame next week

If the thrill of a 12-team college football playoff system for the first time wasn’t enough, Ty Son Lawton, a former star at Curtis High School, does have a link to the tournament from Staten Island.

In addition to leading the team with 12 rushing touchdowns, the hard-nosed running back has ran for 634 yards on 131 runs (4.8 yards per carry) during his red shirt senior season, making a significant impact for the 11-1 Hoosiers.

After a stellar career at Stony Brook, Lawton attended James Madison for a year before entering Indiana. This season, he has scored two touchdowns in a game three times, including against Florida International, Charlotte, and Ohio State. A few weeks ago, the Buckeyes handed the Hoosiers their lone defeat of the season.

The 5-foot-9, 208-pound Lawton has hauled in 11 catches for 114 yards for the Big Ten school in addition to his impressive running stats.

Among the teams Indiana has beaten this season are Michigan, Michigan State, Purdue, Washington, Nebraska, and UCLA.

On December 20 in South Bend, the No. 8 Hoosiers will play the No. 5 Fighting Irish. The game begins at 8:00 p.m.

Naturally, Lawton was instrumental in Curtis’ two consecutive PSAL city championship triumphs over Erasmus Hall in the 2016–17 campaign. During his tenure with the Warriors, he not only amassed more than 2,600 yards but also contributed to the St. George school’s 23-1 record in both his junior and senior seasons. In fact, during his senior year of high school, Lawton ran for 970 yards and 13 touchdowns.
