Low-income families can get financial help from Con Edison this winter

Some low-income households may want assistance in keeping warm this winter as the temperature outside turns cooler.

According to a thorough written statement, Con Edison customers who qualify for government assistance benefits can receive a monthly energy bill discount of up to $173 under the Energy Affordability Program (EAP).

Our effort is focused on keeping electricity cheap, said Kelsey Berger, Con Edison Customer Operations Section Manager. If a consumer is having problems paying their energy bill, we encourage them to contact us. We are available to assist. On its website, Con Edison provides a one-stop-shop for information and links to programs that are intended to assist our most economically vulnerable customers, in addition to tools and advice for reducing energy expenses. In order to provide our clients with the resources they require, we are also collaborating with other agencies and organizations.

The good news? “The EAP is already registered with low-income families who receive funds from programs such as the Home Energy Assistance Program, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), Supplemental Security Income (SSI), and some other programs,” the statement stated.

However, low-income families must apply for the EAP credit if they receive assistance from programs such as Medicaid, a Survivors Pension, the Lifeline Telephone Service Program, Federal Public Housing Assistance, and/or Veterans Disability payments.

Families can fill out the enrollment or benefit claim form online, in person, or by fax, snail mail, or email.

According to the statement, Con Edison gave its low-income customers savings totaling hundreds of millions of dollars this year alone. An additional $40 million was spent on gas, while $201 million was spent on electricity.
