New York’s Staten Island. Staten Islanders, however, anticipated that.
When the 123rd Precinct released a notice stating that garbage can thefts are increasing on Staten Island, that was the main subject of reactions to an article on Advance/SILive.com.
Those rubbish cans, indeed. The required ones, which cost $53 and are offered by the city.
Staten Islanders quickly responded to the news, advising people to chain the cans when not on the curb and to ensure that their address is marked on the can.
Of the approximately 400 Staten Islanders who commented on Facebook and Instagram, all of them were either furious, indignant, passionately resigned, or amused—but only in a black comedy sense.
Many people said that their cans were among the ones that were taken. Although the cans’ serial numbers haven’t proved useful so far, someone mentioned that a stolen can was located using an Apple airtag.
Another claimed that when they attempted to report the cans to the police, they were informed that they couldn’t be located.
Perhaps the trash cans, recycling bins, compost bins, catalytic converters, and packages on our porches might all be chained together. Steve remarked on Facebook that they couldn’t possible take them all.
In any case, residents of Staten Island are requesting that the city find a method to enhance the program’s implementation so that they are not left in the dark.

Better yet, I found a man selling one for fifty-five dollars at Staten Island yard sales. — Robert
Air tags should be covered by the city. The cost of the trash cans—$45 for the compost can and $55 for the large one—was plenty. Asking [property] owners to spend additional money on sanitation equipment is excessive, even though the city should have a contract with Apple to obtain Apple AirTags or perhaps with Ring! — Gloria
I will no longer replace them! Not taking place. — Laura
What, then, did they anticipate? People who disregarded the rules are harming those of us who followed them. — Trish
Who didn’t anticipate this? — Nick
Why don’t you take action against those who are stealing them? Like the guys that break into automobiles every night when they’re out and about. James
Are insurance policies offered by the municipal for the trash cans they sell? — Richard
Oh no…We should be able to report the theft of our bins to the police and have replacement ones provided by the sanitation department. Danielle
My friend put an air on his, and when it vanished, he went straight to its location. — Kevin
Hold on! A summons from the Department of Health is forthcoming. Due to ridiculous, obscure NYC trash cans, neighbors will be using 311 to spy on neighbors. It’s like Albania in 1955! — Michael
Instagram:
They informed me there was nothing they could do when I went to submit a police report. They can do something, but even that won’t get your bins back unless I have clear video of their face or license plate.
You can anticipate that if you start charging that much for bins. Since the compost bins were free, why not provide the trash and recycling bins for free or at a discounted price? Financial difficulties are already difficult enough; please quit taking advantage of us!
That didn’t take long at all, lol. The city is stealing money, so wait till they start whining this winter that the pails are cracking and the lids are breaking off.
The simple fix is to avoid picking up trash from trashcans that have been known to be stolen; they should be bar tagged. The fines can be used to compensate the victims of stolen trashcans. Impounded trashcans should be returned to their rightful owners and the address of the location where they were used should be summoned.
