Costco egg recall from New York supplier: FDA classifies salmonella risk as highest level

New York’s Staten Island — A Costco egg recall has been categorized by the Food and Drug Administration as having the highest risk category because of possible salmonella contamination.

The FDA changed it to Class I because there is a plausible chance that it will result in death or major negative health effects.

A month prior, Handsome Brook Farms, an egg supplier based in New York, voluntarily recalled 10,800 24-count Kirkland Signature eggs that were sold at Costco because of possible Salmonella contamination. Salmonella can cause serious infections in young children, the elderly, and people with compromised immune systems.

According to Handsome Brook Farm’s website, the recall was started when the company discovered that eggs that weren’t meant for retail distribution were packaged and sold in retail packaging.

According to the company, no illnesses have been recorded as a result of the recall thus far.

Salmonella symptoms include cramping in the stomach, fever, and diarrhea. According to the CDC, they can last four to seven days and often start six hours to six days after being exposed to the bacteria.

Beginning on November 22, 2024, 25 Costco locations in five states—Alabama, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee—sold the recalled eggs. These eggs may still be in consumers’ homes even if their use-by date is January 5, 2025.

The 24-count packets of Kirkland Signature Organic Pasture Raised eggs bearing the UPC 9661910680 are the subject of the recall. The only cartons impacted are those with Julian code 327 and a use-by date of January 5, 2025.

According to the recall notification, customers who own the recalled eggs should either discard them or return them to their neighborhood Costco for a complete refund.
