Tragedy struck Smith State Prison in Georgia in the early hours of Sunday morning when a food service employee was fatally shot. According to the Georgia Department of Corrections, the victim, identified as 24-year-old Aureon Shavea Grace from Statesboro, was allegedly shot in the prison’s kitchen by inmate Jaydrekus Hart at approximately 4:30 a.m. Subsequently, Hart used the firearm to take his own life.
Aureon Shavea Grace had been employed at the prison since January as part of the food service staff contracted through Aramark, a prominent provider of food services to correctional facilities across Georgia and other states in the U.S.
Debbie Albert, spokesperson for Aramark, expressed profound sorrow over the incident, stating, “We are heartbroken over the loss of our colleague, and our hearts and prayers go out to her family. This is a tragedy for all of us.” Aramark is actively collaborating with Georgia prison officials to support the investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Smith State Prison, categorized as a close-security facility accommodating up to 1,500 inmates, has unfortunately experienced similar incidents in recent times. Less than a year ago, in October, the prison witnessed the killing of correctional officer Robert Clark, who was attacked by an inmate he was escorting using a makeshift weapon.
The Georgia Department of Corrections has taken custody of the weapon involved in the incident and has pledged to conduct a thorough investigation into the sequence of events leading up to the tragedy. Authorities are determined to uncover the details surrounding the incident and ensure that all appropriate measures are taken to prevent such occurrences in the future.
