Governor Kathy Hochul has heralded a significant milestone in New York’s ongoing battle against gun violence, announcing a substantial 28% reduction in shootings resulting in injuries from January to May 2024 compared to the same period last year. This decline, supported by data from police departments participating in the Gun Involved Violence Elimination (GIVE) initiative, reflects a concerted effort to enhance public safety measures across the state.
Despite the overall decrease in gun-related incidents, Governor Hochul emphasized the state’s proactive stance on gun violence prevention. She unveiled plans to allocate an additional $36 million to bolster local police budgets, reinforcing critical law enforcement capabilities aimed at further reducing crime rates. This funding increase marks the second consecutive year of enhanced investment in the GIVE program, which now extends support to 28 additional agencies statewide.
The GIVE initiative encompasses a multifaceted approach, including intensified background checks, expanded red-flag laws, and community outreach initiatives that have contributed significantly to the positive trend. Hochul highlighted the collaboration between law enforcement agencies, community organizations, and state officials as pivotal in achieving these outcomes, underscoring the importance of comprehensive strategies in tackling complex public safety challenges.
In addition to the decrease in shootings, Hochul’s administration pointed to a notable decline in gun sales within New York State, exceeding national averages. This trend is attributed to stringent legislative measures, increased public awareness campaigns, and the implementation of innovative intervention programs designed to address underlying causes of gun violence.

State police efforts have also yielded substantial results, with nearly 973 firearms seized so far in 2024, surpassing previous years’ totals and reflecting ongoing efforts to remove illegal firearms from communities.
Hochul expressed confidence that continued investments in law enforcement resources and community-based initiatives will build upon these achievements, fostering safer neighborhoods and reinforcing New York’s commitment to effective crime prevention strategies.
