Major New York highway can ban repeat toll offenders, report says

New York’s Staten Island — Scofflaws take note: starting this year, delinquent tolls will face increased penalties.

According to a recent Albany Times-Union report, the New York Thruway Authority recently adopted a new rule that would allow serial toll evaders to be prohibited from utilizing the cross-state expressway.

According to the paper, toll evasion cost the Thruway Authority about $40 million in 2023, and this step is an effort to combat it.

The outlet claims that collected tolls provide the great majority of the highway’s finance.

The Thruway State Police detachment will police these prohibitions, but for the time being, the typical driver can relax, according to the report.

A few dozen trucks and logistics companies from other states, including one Canadian company that owes the Thruway more than $500,000, would be the first drivers targeted by these bans, according to the Times-Union.

According to the new regulations, any vehicle or kind of vehicle using the Thruway system must pay the tolls and adhere to the Thruway Authority’s rules and regulations in order to be allowed to utilize the system.

In addition to other vehicles or vehicle kinds owned or operated by the owner and/or operator of such vehicles or types, vehicles that violate any of the Thruway Authority’s rules and regulations may be permanently or temporarily barred from the Thruway system.
