Mexico to line U.S. border with 10,000 soldiers as tariffs are postponed

In order to reach an agreement on the deployment of Mexican troops to the shared U.S.-Mexican border, President Donald Trump has decided to delay his intention to impose tariffs on the country’s largest trading partner for at least one month.

Trump claimed to have had a conversation with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo on Monday morning and that the two had come to an agreement that would put his 25% tariff, which he had unilaterally imposed, on hold until a settlement was negotiated.

Trump claimed on his Truth Social media platform that she committed to provide 10,000 Mexican soldiers on the border between Mexico and the United States right away after a cordial chat.

The Trump said that those troops would help manage illicit border crossings and stop the flow of fentanyl.

We also agreed to immediately halt the planned tariffs for a month, during which time high-level Mexican representatives will negotiate under the leadership of Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Secretary of Treasury Scott Bessent, and Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick. As we try to reach an agreement between our two nations, I’m excited to take part in those talks with President Sheinbaum,” Trump added.

Sheinbaum claimed on social media that she and President Trump had a fruitful discussion on our relationship and sovereignty, and that they had come to a number of accords.

First, the U.S. president has stated that Mexico will send troops. Second, according to Sheinbaum, the United States has pledged to try to stop the trafficking of powerful weapons to Mexico, which the drug cartels allegedly employ to carry out violent crimes. Sheinbaum stated that the United States will halt tariffs and that the two countries would start working on two fronts today: commerce and security.

According to a translation, she stated in a subsequent post, “We are a free, independent, and sovereign country.”

The back and forth follows Trump’s announcement late Saturday that he would impose a 25% tariff on products coming into the United States from Canada and Mexico, the country’s two closest trading partners. Trump said that he was taking this action to prevent the importation of synthetic opioids. In response, both countries pledged their own levies.

Trump expanded his litany of complaints about our northern neighbors on Monday morning, but he repeated his message.

U.S. banks are not even permitted to start or conduct business in Canada. What is the purpose of that? There are many such things, but it’s also a drug war, and drugs crossing the Canadian and Mexican borders have killed hundreds of thousands of Americans. I spoke with Justin Trudeau just now. Trump wrote, “I’ll be talking to him again at 3:00 PM.”
