STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Governor Kathy Hochul announced a new state investment of about $63.9 million to improve security and safety at community-based, nonprofit groups that are thought to be vulnerable to hate crimes or attacks because of their missions, beliefs, or ideologies.
According to a Tuesday statement, the cash, which is made available through the Securing Communities Against Hate Crimes Program, will help 336 organizations across New York with projects and cybersecurity enhancements.
Hochul also announced that 223 nonprofit organizations that are vulnerable to terrorist or other extremist assaults will receive more than $44.8 million in government financing. The money will be used to improve their overall readiness and fortify the security of their buildings.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency is providing the funds, which is being distributed to New York in two distinct awards: $8.8 million for groups in the rest of the state and $36 million for organizations in the New York City area.
These initiatives are managed by the New York State Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services.
One of my main goals is to create a space where all New Yorkers, regardless of what makes them unique, feel secure, accepted, and supported, and I’m determined to use every resource at my disposal to achieve this, Hochul stated. We are providing community organizations with the tools they need to safeguard themselves and deliver their services in a secure setting with these new investments.
Kirsten Gillibrand, a state senator, announced the funds. “The state remains committed to ensuring that at-risk organizations have the necessary resources to improve their safety and security measures,” she said, despite a notable increase in hate crimes across the nation.
