New York prison inmate dies a month after sustaining serious injury

Utica, New York. According to his relatives, an inmate who suffered severe injuries at a state prison in Central New York last month passed away.

According to Timothy Sholtz, the inmate’s relative, Edward Sholtz, 22, passed away on Sunday at Wynn Hospital in Utica.

According to state prison officials, Sholtz was transported from Mid-State Correctional Facility in Oneida County to the hospital on December 17. According to family members, Sholtz was brain dead on December 20th, according to a doctor.

Thomas Mailey, a spokesman for the prisons department, said the Office of Special Investigations has been looking into what transpired. He claimed last week that there was no evidence of any wrongdoing on the part of the workers.

Now, the state attorney general’s office is probably going to start looking into Sholtz’s death. According to state law, the office is empowered to look into any deaths caused by the actions—or inactions—of law enforcement, including correctional officers.

According to his aunt, Stacey Young, Sholtz lived in a single cell and did not try to commit suicide. Young stated that since Sholtz had his cell to himself, she didn’t believe he had been hurt by another prisoner.

In 2021, Sholtz accepted a plea bargain from a judge and was sentenced to 12 years in jail. He acknowledged beating a 71-year-old man who intervened after he tried to rape a 37-year-old lady who was jogging on Syracuse’s Onondaga Creekwalk.

Last year, Sholtz’s conviction was upheld by a Rochester appeal court. Last August, the Court of Appeals, the state’s highest court, turned down the case.

In Oneida County, Mid-State is one of two state prisons under heightened surveillance.

Inmates were viciously jumped on, kicked, and sodomized by dozens of Mid-State correctional staff in 2016. Last month, a judge declared that the state owed the prisoners money damages. A large number of the officers are still employed with the institution.

Last month, inmate Robert L. Brooks was beaten by multiple corrections officials on an examination table in the prison infirmary at Marcy Correctional Facility, which is across the street. After Brooks passed away at Wynn Hospital, a special prosecutor looked into the matter.
