NYC subway stabbings lead to arrest of Brooklyn man, says NYPD

A Brooklyn man has been taken into custody in relation to two stabbings that police claim happened in the Bronx and Manhattan subway systems in the first two days of the new year.

The NYPD’s Deputy Commissioner of Public Information said in a statement on Sunday that Jamar Banks, 52, of Blake Avenue in East New York, is charged with first-degree assault and third-degree criminal possession of a weapon.

A 31-year-old man was on a northbound No. 2 train at the 14th Street and Seventh Avenue station on Wednesday, January 1 at around 9:40 a.m. when Banks approached him and started a verbal altercation, according to the police report. Before leaving the station, Banks allegedly brandished a knife and stabbed the victim in the back.

According to authorities, the victim was taken in stable condition by EMS to Bellevue Hospital.

A 47-year-old male MTA employee who was off duty was on the northbound No. 5 train platform at the Pelham Parkway Station on Thursday, January 2, at around 6:10 a.m., when Banks allegedly approached him and began a verbal altercation. According to police, Banks then allegedly brandished a knife and stabbed the victim in the back and under the armpit before escaping the station.

After EMS arrived, the victim was taken to Jacobi Hospital in a stable state.

According to the New York Post, officers were advised to approach Banks with extreme caution since he may be carrying the assault weapon and has a history of at least 87 prior arrests.

According to sources who spoke to the site, Banks was arrested with what police described as a huge knife, which he allegedly used in the attacks.
