Staten Island college football: Wagner falls in season finale

Long Island University defeated Wagner 35-28 on Saturday in the season finale for both programs. Ethan Greenwood ran for two touchdowns, including a 56-yarder to start the scoring, and Ludovick Choquette punched in a score from two yards out in the fourth quarter.

The Sharks finished 4-8 (3-3 in the Northeast Conference) after losing their first six games of the season. They then won four of their last six games. Despite celebrating Senior Day, Wagner lost its last four games (4-8, 2-4).

Wagner failed to get a first down on its first possession and punted, but Greenwood led the Sharks to the Wagner 19 on their first drive before being stopped on fourth down.

Greenwood sprinted 56 yards for the touchdown after breaking free up the middle on the drive’s second play. The Greenwood-to-Howell pass made it 14-0, and LIU just needed four plays to cover 75 yards after forcing a second Wagner three-and-out.

Jake Cady’s pass interference penalty helped the Seahawks start their following possession. The lead was subsequently cut in half to 14–7 when he struck Jaylen Bonelli for a 35-yard reception that led to Rickey Spruill’s 3-yard touchdown.

Starting late in the third quarter, when Choquette’s touchdown put LIU ahead 35–21 with less than 12 minutes remaining, the team ran 75 yards in 12 plays.

To draw within a touchdown, Wagner responded with a 13-play, 65-yard drive that was finished by Cady’s 1-yard run. However, with five seconds remaining, Cady passed incomplete from the LIU 12 to prevent a 13-play, 64-yard drive that would have tied the game.

Greenwood rushed 18 times for 133 yards and completed 8 of 12 throws for 129 yards with an interception. He also added a 5-yard dash to the goal zone in the second quarter to make the score 21–14 at the half.

Cady passed for 143 yards on 15 of 29 passes for Wagner.
