2 MTA bus stops removed from Staten Island University Hospital campus: What riders need to know

New York’s Staten Island — The Staten Island University Hospital (SIUH) campus in Ocean Breeze will no longer be traversed by the S52 bus.

The S52 bus, which travels on Seaview Avenue between the St. George Ferry Terminal and the hospital’s North Campus, had two bus stops removed from its route as of Sunday.

The bus stops at University Drive/Medical Arts Pavilion East and University Drive/Northwell Health Labs, which bookended the route between St. George and the hospital, were to be discontinued, per SIUH’s request to the MTA.

The decision to withdraw the bus from the hospital grounds was made because of increased automobile and pedestrian traffic on campus, according to a SIUH spokesperson during a public Community Board meeting in November.

According to an MTA representative at the same conference, the S52 only passes through the hospital grounds through an arrangement between SIUH and the transportation authority because the facility is private property.

The MTA stated that it had to respect the decision when SIUH asked that the bus stops be phased out.

The hospital has suggested looking into alternate bus route choices that would guarantee safer travel for both bus drivers and pedestrians after carefully weighing safety considerations. According to SIUH spokesman Jillian O. Hara, the campus’s current traffic flow has been shown to pose hazards to safe travel, particularly for buses.

Given this, the hospital recommended investigating possible fixes that would facilitate easier access to and from the campus while ensuring everyone’s safety, she added.

An MTA official stated that Seaview Avenue and Mason Avenue would be the new first stop for buses returning to St. George going forward.

Seaview Avenue and Nugent Avenue will be the final bus stops on the way to the hospital.

In Mason Avenue, just before the guard rails close to Delaware Avenue, the buses will then try to turn around.
