A 17-year-old, Long Island hockey player dies while taking part in charity event

According to several sources, a 17-year-old senior in high school passed away after being taken to the hospital late Saturday night following an unexpected medical incident that occurred during a charity hockey game.

At the Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center in Bethpage, Louisiana, Connor Kasin, a senior at Massapequa High School, passed out during breaks. According to the Nassau County Police Department, Kasin was not able to be saved despite numerous onlookers trying to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation on him before emergency personnel arrived.

Before his death was declared, Kasin was also taken to the hospital. It is unknown what caused his death. No illegal activity is suspected, according to the authorities.

The Sharks Elite Youth Hockey team’s player, Kasin, was ironically participating in a charity tournament in honor of Sabrina Navaretta, who lost her life in a vehicle accident last year. Navaretta graduated from Syosset High School. A nonprofit that aims to raise money to provide support to bereaved parents who have lost a child organized the charity competition.

Parents and students at Massapequa High School were informed of Kasin’s passing.

The news that Connor did not make it out alive is devastating. The school, which provides grief counseling to its students, said, “Connor’s passing is devastating to the Massapequa community, and we offer our deepest condolences to Connor’s family and friends.”

Sabrina’s parents, John and Mara Navaretta, also issued a statement through CBS News.

The Navarettas remarked, “There are no words to express the heartbreak we feel because last night was supposed to be a fun night.” To commemorate Sabrina’s life and our family’s dedication to helping with scholarships, dog rescue, and supporting bereaved parents, the community joined together.

We want the Kasin family to understand how much we value you. Our family is here for you, and Connor was there to play for Sabrina. Grief can knock you down, so please take your time and treat yourself with kindness. When you’re ready, John and I are here to help.
