Big Apple Circus returns with ‘Hometown Playground,’ celebrating the magic of NYC under the big top

New York, N.Y. If you’re seeking for a family-friendly pastime, the 2024 edition of the Big Apple Circus’s brand-new show, Hometown Playground, is a must-see. The circus has returned to New York City.

This year’s production, which runs through January 5, 2025, will dazzle audiences under the famous Big Top at Lincoln Center’s Damrosch Park. It honors the spirit of the city that never sleeps by providing a thrilling blend of high-flying stunts, humorous performances, and touching moments for families and circus enthusiasts of all ages.

A memorable tour of New York’s varied neighborhoods and sites is provided by Hometown Playground. Every act showcases the extraordinary talents of foreign entertainers while highlighting the city’s liveliness.

One of the highlights is Sofia Petrov, who captivates the audience with her aerial skill on the Aerial Orb while elegantly hovering far above the audience. With their audacious mid-air flips and catches, the Flying Poemas, a family of trapeze artists, astonish audiences with their amazing acrobatics.

COMEDY, ACROBATS, AND MORE

From where we sat, the show’s charming wit was a welcome complement to its appeal. The audience is in stitches when Swedish entertainer Michael Halverson, aka the Comedy Pickpocket, takes watches and wallets in a funny way.

While the Human Fountains provide a distinctively New York flavor by hilariously imitating the city’s famous fountains and shocking a few fortunate audience members with a splash, the Cartoon Poodles, a group of rescued canines, enthrall with their fun pranks. To complete an astounding talent roster, the production also showcases Mihret Mekonnen’s amazing power and balance on the slack wire.

Hometown Playground, directed by Emmy-winning Shanda Sawyer and produced by acclaimed producer Michael Cohl, honors the Big Apple Circus’ tradition of small-scale, one-ring shows while capturing the spirit of New York City.

Cohl described the show as traditional family entertainment for audiences of all ages, saying the gifted actors “are ready to dazzle, entertain, and bring the heartbeat of the Big Apple to life.”

PARTICIPATION IN THE COMMUNITY AND MORE

In order to provide free admission to children and families around the city, the Big Apple Circus continues to prioritize community involvement by providing tickets to neighborhood NGOs and community-based organizations. To promote its goal of making the circus accessible to all, the organization also provides reasonably priced daytime programming for schools.

The Big Apple Circus was established in 1977 as a substitute for the conventional three-ring circus and has long been renowned for its intimacy and skill. The circus, now in its 47th year, is still a beloved New York City custom. It invites visitors to rediscover the delight of live performances under the Big Top this season, featuring new artists and a celebration of the city’s colorful culture.
