A heartbreaking incident unfolded in Orange County on Monday, May 20, at Hudson Valley Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram dealership located on Route 17K in the town of Newburgh. According to preliminary reports from Newburgh Police, a tragic accident occurred involving a 2024 Jeep Wrangler driven by a 68-year-old man.
Witnesses described a harrowing scene as the vehicle unexpectedly accelerated while the driver attempted to maneuver into a parking space. The sudden acceleration resulted in the Jeep striking a pedestrian who was walking directly in front of the dealership. Despite efforts to avoid the collision, the pedestrian was trapped under the vehicle as it continued its trajectory across Route 17K.
Emergency responders swiftly arrived at the scene and rushed the critically injured pedestrian to St. Luke’s Hospital in Newburgh. Tragically, despite the best efforts of medical professionals, the pedestrian succumbed to their injuries and was pronounced dead at the hospital.
The identity of the deceased individual has not been disclosed pending notification of their family. Newburgh Police have launched a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident. At this stage, no charges have been filed as authorities work diligently to determine the cause of the sudden acceleration and any contributing factors.
