As a result of a months-long spate of robberies in which three people have escaped police and stolen ATMs and thousands of dollars from their establishments, bodega workers around the city are scared and frustrated, according to the NYPD.
Three unidentified people were accused of using stolen cars to drive to businesses in upper Manhattan, the Bronx, Brooklyn, and Queens, where they forcibly entered and took ATMs and other property between September 19 and December 26. The police were informed of at least 49 incidents involving these individuals.
The city’s bodega workers are represented by the United Bodegas of America (UBA), which is now offering a $5,000 reward for information that leads to the capture of the nimble and crafty criminals known as The Midnight Smashers.
We think everything is OK when we go home, but when we wake up the following morning, we discover that our gate has been torn down. The doors were broken down. At a news conference on Thursday, UBA spokesman Fernando Mateo said, “And guess what? Our ATM machine is gone with thousands of dollars in it.”
“It’s simply unbelievable that our police department, which is the best in the world, is unable to take down this gang,” Mateo added. These robberies directly threaten the safety and means of subsistence of New York’s industrious families; they are more than just steals. To stop more victims, we must act right away.
The NYPD made surveillance footage of the people they were looking for public.
