New York’s Staten Island. According to court filings, a Staten Island man told police his plans that evening after being apprehended breaking into a posh restaurant three months prior.
Steven Cabrera, 28, of the Tompkinsville neighborhood of the 200 block of Victory Boulevard, stated, “I was taking wine; I was going to sell it for crack.”
In state Supreme Court, St. George, Cabrera entered a guilty plea Monday before Justice Lisa Grey to charges of second-degree burglary and petit larceny related to two instances on the North Shore of the borough.
He will be sentenced on December 17 to three and a half years in prison and five years of post-release supervision in exchange for his plea. In addition, Grey imposed protection orders for some of the case’s witnesses and victims.
Alexsis Barravecchia, the defendant’s lawyer, chose not to comment on the case.

Restaurant break-in
A burglary at the Beso restaurant on Bay Street on September 3, which prosecutors said occurred at around 12:15 a.m., just a few hours after closing time, was one of the incidents Cabrera was connected to.
According to reports, Cabrera told police after his detention, “I went to the restaurant; I don’t know the address or name.” I entered through the refrigerator after entering by the rear.
According to people with knowledge of the case, the owner watched him on live CCTV footage after a security alert revealed movement in the back of the home.
Cabrera stole an iPad and several bottles of wine and claimed, “I saw you guys and that’s when I left.”
Mailroom thefts
Surveillance footage showed Cabrera stealing items from the mail area of an apartment complex on Stuyvesant Place in St. George the night before the restaurant break-in.
Court filings further state that the event happened just after midnight. Cabrera explained the same motivation to investigators: I stole four packages and sold them for crack.
To get to the goods, he allegedly broke through the mailroom door.
Twice in just 48 hours
Regarding the defendant’s plea, District Attorney Michael E. McMahon released the following statement this week.
Cabrera was a cause of crime in the safest borough in New York City, and McMahon stated that his series of crimes called for a sentence of several years in jail.
