In the wake of an unimaginable tragedy, the Sussex County community has come together to support the Morgan family, who are mourning the loss of their 6-year-old daughter, Lucy Morgan. Lucy passed away following a freak accident at a lake cottage in Maine, which has left the community in shock and heartbreak.
On June 1, Lucy was enjoying a day with her family, watching her three siblings play badminton. In a tragic turn of events, the aluminum shaft of a badminton racket dislodged from its handle, striking Lucy in the head and piercing her skull. Despite being intubated and receiving intensive care at a hospital in Portland, Maine, Lucy succumbed to her injuries four days later, on June 5.
The Morgan family, residents of Hardyston Township, has received an outpouring of support from friends, neighbors, and even strangers. A GoFundMe page was established to help ease the financial burdens associated with Lucy’s medical expenses and funeral costs. The fundraiser quickly gained traction, surpassing $125,000 with over 1,400 donations as of Monday afternoon. Contributions ranged widely, with nine anonymous donors each giving $1,000.
Beyond financial support, the community has extended their help in other heartfelt ways. Rich Densel, owner of Grower’s Choice, a family-operated greenhouse in West Milford, brought an array of fuchsia flowers to the Morgan’s home, adding vibrant color and a touch of solace to their yard. The gesture was part of a broader effort by the family’s church community, who gathered after Sunday service to plant flowers and offer their condolences.
Adding to the comfort, a baby wallaby named Bella, from the Grower’s Choice petting zoo, visited the Morgan children. The adorable marsupial provided a much-needed distraction and some joy during this sorrowful time. The children took turns carrying Bella in a pouch and feeding her, momentarily lifting their spirits.
Jesse Morgan, Lucy’s father and the worship and discipleship pastor at Green Pond Bible Chapel in Rockaway Township expressed profound gratitude for the overwhelming support. On his Facebook page, he thanked his church family and the community for their acts of kindness, which have brought some light during their darkest days.
Jesse Morgan also shared heartfelt memories of Lucy, describing her as a loving and independent child who enjoyed cuddling and had a strong faith. She was known as her mother’s “mini-me” and was deeply loved by her family and friends. In his blog, New Creation Living, Jesse wrote about Lucy’s vibrant personality and the immense void her passing has left in their lives.

The collective effort has not only helped to cover financial expenses but also offered emotional solace, reminding the Morgans that they are not alone in their time of need.
