Brooklyn cop who helped resuscitate man at Staten Island bowling alley promoted by NYPD

New York’s Staten Island. According to a story in the New York Post, the NYPD has promoted an officer who acted while off duty in 2019 to save a man having a heart attack at a bowling alley in Dongan Hills.

At a ceremony on Friday honoring 177 uniformed and civilian force members, Giovanni Cucuzza, 34, a nine-year veteran, was elevated to the position of investigator within the Intelligence Bureau.

Cucuzza told the media that saving someone’s life is always the best feeling since it allows them to live longer and continue to love their family.

On Sunday, October 13, 2019, at around 7 p.m., Cucuzza, Joseph Glorioso, and John Desiderio—all then assigned to the NYPD’s 61st Precinct in Brooklyn—were bowling in a weekly league at Rab’s Country Lanes when an elderly man unexpectedly collapsed to his knees two lanes away.

Cucuzza, who lives in Brooklyn, went over to try to talk to the man right away. He tried to raise his head to clear his airway since, according to Cucuzza, he was in and out of awareness.

The man was put on his back, and then the men’s training took over. As Desiderio, a resident of Annadale, applied chest compressions and Glorioso, a Brooklyn resident, kept checking for vital signs—the man still had no pulse—Cucuzza raced to get the lane’s defibrillator.

The cops used the defibrillator to restart the man’s heartbeat while they tore open his shirt and dialed 911. Following a number of difficult moments, the man became responsive after the cops were able to regain his heartbeat.

It is clear that the police officer considers and desires to assist others. And occurrences like that are the reason we took on this profession, Cucuzza stated. This seemed like the right place to do it. Of course, there’s a reason they name us the Finest, don’t they? Cucuzza described the incident to the Post.

Cucuzza continued, “I still look forward to working with people, protecting the city, and making sure everyone is safe.”
