Candlelight vigil held for Staten Island mom slain outside West Brighton apartment complex

New York’s Staten Island. In honor of Jennira Roundtree, a 43-year-old mother of four and grandmother of one, who was fatally stabbed during a fight close to her home on Tuesday night, dozens of friends, family, and community members gathered in West Brighton on Wednesday to observe a candlelight vigil.

Many in attendance lit votive candles in Roundtree’s memory, and during the very cold, somber gathering in front of 820 Henderson Ave., shoulders were sobbed on and hugs were exchanged.

Others scrawled love messages on a giant cardboard sign that was affixed to the front of the building and carried heart-shaped balloons. It included multiple pictures of the local matriarch.

Diamond Brantley, Roundtree’s neighbor and friend, told the Advance/SILive.com that she will stop at nothing to keep her children safe. In order to prevent any drama, she would constantly come out and tell them to go back inside. She never experienced any issues, and I sincerely hope that the person responsible is apprehended.

According to a statement from the NYPD’s Deputy Commissioner of Public Information, Roundtree was stabbed numerous times in the chest before police arrived at approximately 7:35 p.m. in response to a 911 call of an assault near the West Brighton Houses housing complex.

A source with knowledge of the investigation said that Roundtree was killed following a fight outside one of the buildings that involved up to 20 women.

According to the police statement, EMS arrived and took Roundtree to Richmond University Medical Center in West Brighton, where she passed away from her wounds.
