New York’s Staten Island — After a successful winter session, the College of Staten Island (CSI) is extending its Medical Internship in Morocco Program through its Center for Global Engagement to the summer of 2025.
Students participating in the program intern at public university hospitals in Tangier, Fez, and Marrakech, Morocco.
Under the direction of CSI Biology Professor Abdeslem El Idrissi, participants get a rare chance to see healthcare environments that are different from those in the United States. During the winter session, which began on January 2nd, there were also cultural outings to the Sahara Desert and other well-known Moroccan sites.
According to Dr. Stephen Ferst, director of the college’s Center for Global Engagement, one feature that sets this program apart is how deeply students are involved in learning about how physicians and hospitals operate on a daily basis. Undergraduate students in the US have the chance to tour a hospital from the inside, which gives them a great perspective on the vocations they may pursue.
Beyond the internship, students are exposed to diverse cultures and viewpoints, which expands their minds, Ferst continued. One of the most life-changing experiences an undergraduate can have, he said.

Both CUNY and non-CUNY students are eligible to participate in the medical internship program, which offers credit earning opportunities.
The medical internship program began in 2016 and has since given 69 students—27 from CSI, 38 from CUNY, and four from outside CUNY—valuable rotations in medical specialties such as pediatric emergency care, obstetrics, neurosurgery, cardiology, radiology, internal medicine, and more.
During their internship, students work 25–30 hours a week at the Centre Hospitalier Universitaire, alternating between several departments while being supervised by CSI faculty and local mentors.
Along with this special internship opportunity, CSI is promoting more extensive academic ties and faculty exchanges with Moroccan hospitals, as well as research collaborations. Additionally, the school is working with the Center for Handicapped in Tangier to investigate disability studies prospects with CSI’s School of Education.
This international internship gives students a competitive edge in a field that is becoming more and more demanding, providing vital exposure to the medical area for those thinking about a career in healthcare.
For students interested in learning more about the program and the application process, CSI will have a Study Abroad Fair in the Center for the Arts on February 6. For more information, interested students can also stop by the CSI Center for Global Engagement office (2A-206).
