Convicted sex offender considering political comeback in NYC

After his once-promising career was ruined by sexting scandals and a subsequent criminal conviction for having unlawful online contact with a kid, former U.S. Representative Anthony Weiner has filed to compete for a seat on the New York City Council, perhaps marking a comeback in politics.

In addition to naming Weiner as a contender for a lower Manhattan council seat, campaign finance documents also show a campaign committee named Weiner 25 that was established on Friday for Weiner.

Weiner, a Democrat, told The Associated Press over the phone on Tuesday that he is still considering whether to run for office. He claimed that in order to attend a forum hosted by the Downtown Independent Democrats later this week, he created the committee late last week.

He directed further inquiries to recent remarks he made on his weekly radio program, The Middle with Anthony Weiner, in which he discussed the personal dynamics of a return to politics and stated: I haven’t decided if I want to do this yet.

After sending obscene pictures to multiple women, Weiner resigned from his position as a representative for a congressional district in New York City in 2011. In 2013, he attempted to run for mayor again, but his chances were harmed by fresh information about pornographic images Weiner had sent using the online persona Carlos Danger.

Weiner was given a 21-month sentence in federal prison after entering a guilty plea in 2017 to having illegal online contact with a 15-year-old girl. He was ordered to register as an asex offender after being released in 2019.
