Costco making a major change at hundreds of stores next month, reports say

New York’s Staten Island — Costco’s central aisle may soon be noticeably devoid of tables of discounted bestsellers. Several sources indicate that the warehouse retailer intends to remove the store’s well-liked book department from most of its 600+ locations in the United States starting next month.

The New York Times broke the story of the book ban in June when four publishing executives told them that the retailer would no longer regularly stock books starting in January 2025. According to the media site, Costco plans to offer them solely during the holiday shopping season, which runs from September to December.

According to The Times, select books might occasionally be offered for sale at Costco locations for the remainder of the year, but not regularly.

The executives blamed the business shift primarily on the effort involved in stocking books: copies must be laid out by hand instead of being rolled out on a pallet like other products.

According to the report, store staff had a lot of work because of the frequent turnover of books—new ones are released every Tuesday and the unsold ones must be returned.

A request for comment on the adjustment was not immediately answered by Costco.
