Costco salmon recall: FDA classifies listeria risk at highest level

Because of possible listeria contamination, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has categorized a Costco salmon recall at the highest risk level.

In October, Acme Smoked Fish Corporation recalled Kirkland Signature Smoked Salmon from Costco due to a possible Listeria monocytogenes contamination.

These products have now been classified as a Class I recall by the FDA, which indicates that there is a plausible chance that using or being exposed to a product that violates the law would result in death or major negative health effects.

In the first recall, 111 cases of the fish were found in twin 12-ounce containers bearing the lot number 8512801270, UPC code 0 96619 25697 6, and expiration date of November 13, 2024.

Young children, the elderly, and those with compromised immune systems are susceptible to serious and occasionally deadly infections caused by the bacterium listeria. Listeria infections can result in miscarriages and stillbirths in pregnant women, even though healthy people may only experience transient symptoms including a high temperature, intense headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal discomfort, and diarrhea.

The recall is still in effect. If a consumer experiences an unpleasant reaction, they can notify the FDA.
