Dear Abby: Why should I have to follow wife’s restrictive diet? She’s the only one with heart problems.

Greetings, Abby

Recently, it was determined that my wife had a partial artery blockage. Her physicians will treat it with medication and diet because it isn’t clogged enough to require an angioplasty or a stent.

My wife has informed me that I can no longer eat anything in front of her that she is not allowed to eat because she is now required to follow a specific diet. I have to eat only what she eats. I don’t have any dietary limitations and I’m in terrific health. Is it reasonable for her to demand this of me? How should I handle it? ILLINOIS PENALTIES

DEAR PUNISHED:

I have a suspicion that the diet you mentioned in passing would be heart-healthy. If so, the American Heart Association has released numerous cookbooks with a wide range of delectable recipes over the past 20 years or more. (I have dipped my beak into a few of them, so I know this to be real.)

Eating a heart-healthy diet doesn’t have to be difficult, and it might even help you. To avoid tempting your wife, if you have a craving for something she can’t eat, get it somewhere else. Her life might be on the line, and it’s not a big sacrifice. Take a deep breath, try it, and remind yourself that this is what a loving spouse does for their partner.
