Ex-Giants QB Daniel Jones could be a snap away from playing in playoffs

Daniel Jones, their former quarterback, might be playing for the Minnesota Vikings in the playoffs on Monday when the Giants are at home.

Monday’s NFL Playoffs Wild Card round matchup between Minnesota and the Rams takes place in Los Angeles. Vikings head coach Kevin O. Connell is open to moving Jones to No. 2 over Nick Mullens, who has been the team’s QB2 all season, even though Sam Darnold is currently the team’s top quarterback.

According to O Connell, [Jones] has undoubtedly improved, as reported by ESPN. Along with running scout team work, he has received a lot of excellent work. He also occasionally gets extra help from Nick and Brett [Rypien] and [quarterbacks coach Josh McCown].

To put it simply, we’re doing everything we can to prepare Sam for departure, but at the same time, Brett, Nick, and Daniel are all taking in the game plan as usual. The remainder of the journey is really fluid. Whatever we believe will offer us the best chance of winning, that is what we will do.

O Connel responded that the Vikings will do whatever it takes to give us the best chance to win here the remainder of the way when asked whether Jones could be Darnold’s backup on Monday.

Five days after the Giants released the 27-year-old quarterback on November 22, Minnesota signed him. His poor performance this season—2,070 throwing yards and a dismal 8-7 touchdown-interception ratio—was a major factor in the Giants’ dismal 2-8 record at the time of his release as well as his eventual benching.

He was cut for more reasons than just that, though.

Jones’ injury guarantee of $23 million might have made the Giants’ impending release even more difficult. In short, Jones would have been guaranteed $12 million if he had sustained a significant injury that would have precluded him from passing a physical on March 12. Additionally, he would have received an additional $11 million if he had failed a physical by the first week of the following season.
